Hats Be Bono & Writing Storming in studing historrical resources - Nea Karya Primary School, (Greece)
Students of Nea Karya Primary School of Greece used a simplified form of De Bono Hats and Brainwriting in order to deal with a historical question that came out through their historical research. In 1946, local people moved from the old location of the village to the new one, as the biggest part of the village was destroyed completely by the flooding of Nestos River. Our "Young Time Travelers of History" traveled back in time, got into those local people shoes and set the following historical question to themselves: "Should we stay in the old location rebuilding our old houses or should we move to a new location?"
Students found this procedure really interesting as it brought into surface various abilities of communication, cooperation, critical and creative thinking that were not triggered before. During this procedure the School Councelor of Primary Schools and the headmasters of the two of the three Greek Schools were present so as the latter to follow the procedure along with their students and strengthen the valuable cooperation among the schools that participated in the programme.

Walking in the Old Village of Nea Karya... Following our gradparents' footsteps! (Greece, Nea Karya Primary School)
Students of
Nea Karya Primary School, as part of the program, visited the location of the
old village of Nea Karya (known as Karampei) in order to transfer and expand
into the field all the useful information and knowledge gained through their
investigation so far.
The students
wandered in the neighborhoods where people from Karya and Karampei used to live
and walked along the old riverbed of Nestos River, having as guides two local
residents of the village who were fortunate enough to live in both the old and
the new village, Mr. Adalakis Eleutherios and Mr. Poulouktsis Stelios. They
visited the little church of Zoodochou Pigi, which was later built on the
location of the church of the old village. While exploring the courtyard of
the church they found parts of the old church, the stairs and the mosaic on the
landing, which are preserved until today. The students tried and visualised the
Old Village square, and by crosschecking information gathered by interviews,
old photos and maps they found the location of the community centre, the stone
house of Kara Mpei (the area was named after him) where the first school of the
village was housed for a few years until the regular school building was constructed.
Students also tried and visualised the location of the legendary mulberry tree,
which offered its shadow to everyday people’s meetings. They traced the
location of not only the Christian cemeteries but also of the Turkish ones
(which existed before Greek people set up in that area) and the area that the
school was, but only its ruins have remained. Lastly their look wandered to the
boundaries of the village, making the necessary comparisons between the old and
the new village so as to identify similarities and differences as far as the
size of the area, the street layout and their morphology are concerned. We
warmly thank our two guides Mr. Lefteris and Mr. Stelios for their overall
contribution to our research, including the amount of materials they have spared
and the significant amount of personal time they have dedicated in our effort.
It was a valuable experience, as we
were given the opportunity to follow the footsteps of our grandparents, and
look from a different angle the place that we usually visit but ignore its
history.

Students' excursion in the Old Village location of Nea Karya (Nea Karya Primary School, Greece)
On Thursday 26th April 2013 the students of Nea Karya Primary School visited the location of the Old Village. Since we had studied the local historical maps the students were given the chance to actually see the place they were studying about. It was a great opportunity for them to explore the location that they usually visit but from a different point of view. Having as guides two local elder people, we were guided around the river bed and we found where the village church was built (only the stairs have left), we found where the square, the municipality and the school of the village were located. There is nothing left now as the village was destroyed by the big flood of Nestos River in 1945.

The start of our common story! (Nea Karya Primary School, Greece)
The students
of Nea Karya Primary School, having already chosen the appropriate historical
records, they have already started the process of writing their story, for
which we are going to use and experiment on techniques on creative writing.
The first
stage is to define the characteristics of the heroes’ personality. At first the
groups distributed their heroes. They wrote his or her name on a piece of paper
and then by using the brainwriting technique they found his or her individual
characteristics. At the end of the procedure each group presented their work at
the whole class.
Now we are
ready to move forward to the pre-writing stage.
